Designing Cities UN Trip

Exhibit + Panel + Tour of the United Nations
November 30, 2011

Design with the Other 90%: CITIES
Exhibit by the Smithsonian, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum

Main Gallery, United Nations Visitors Lobby

Join us as we examine the complex issues arising from the unprecedented rate of urban growth, primarily in the informal settlements (“slums”) of the world where over 1 billion people reside. First visit the exhibit which shows design solutions that address the 90 percent of the world’s population not traditionally serviced by the professional design community. The exhibition the will feature more than 60 projects from 22 countries around the globe and explore the multidisciplinary, overlapping relationships among urban planning and design, education, social entrepreneurship, climate change, sanitation and water, migration, public health and affordable housing. Next, tour the UN and participate in a spirited discussion with UN personnel; Medard Gabel, founder and president of BigPictureSmallWorld; and Cynthia Smith, curator of socially responsible design at the Cooper-Hewitt and curator of this exhibit.
