2009-10 Recipient: Albert Lee
Mr. Albert Lee is an integral part of the Burnaby School District’s successful educational technology network and has been for over 15 years. In that time, he has proven himself to be a leader in technology supported learning. He is not only the top of his field in technical infrastructure, but also in communications technology. He regularly connects various countries together via videoconference in order that students may learn from world experts, as well as about each other.
Mr. Lee is truly dedicated to expanding the horizons of students and furthering education, spending much of his spare time on school projects. He also supports others in order that they, too, can promote virtual discussion and communication. If you ask Mr. Lee why he chooses to play such a large role in education and technology, he will say, “It’s all for the kids. They make it worthwhile.” The world is a better place because of Mr. Lee and each and every one of his contributions to learning.

2008-09 Recipient: Joseph Selfridge
Mr. Selfridge is the International Studies Program director. A former lawyer, a current teacher, and stage actor, Joseph Selfridge is a man of versatility. He is also the Senior’s International Relations Seminar teacher. An innovative educator, Mr. Selfridge brings students out into the world, as well as bringing the world into the classroom through arts, cultural, and social science programs.

2007-08 Recipient: Chris Carpenter
A native of Southington, Connecticut, Mr. Christopher Carpenter earned a B.A. in History from Widener University in 1990, an M.A. in Liberal Studies from Rutgers University in 2005, and earned his supervisory certificate from the State of New Jersey in 2009. He has taught history at Sterling since 1992 and currently serves as Supervisor for Basic Skills, English and Business. Carpenter has also dedicated his time and effort over the years to a variety of extra- and co-curricular activities, including Head Baseball Coach (8 years), Department Assistant for English and Foreign Language (6 years), PLC Coordinator for the Social Studies and Fine Arts Departments, Class Advisor, Assistant Soccer Coach and Publications Coordinator. Carpenter was named Teacher of the Year at Sterling High School in 2007.
“The interconnectedness of the human condition” inspires Mr. Carpenter, motivates his teaching, and shapes his interactions with his students. His philosophy of teaching is best described as a cooperative effort between student and teacher. This innovative approach places the student at the center of the learning experience, while the teacher acts simultaneously as guide and fellow explorer. As a result, the classroom environment is one of discovery, and learning is authentic and meaningful. Mr. Carpenter cites the students, school, and community of the Sterling High School District as major forces behind his love of teaching.

2006-07 Recipient: Lynn Domenico
Lynn Domenico, M.Ed is currently serving as the principal of St. Joseph High School in Hammonton, NJ. She is the recipient of the Robert J. Kealey Distinguished Principal Award from the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA). While serving for 35 years as principal of St. Lawrence School in Lindenwold, NJ, Lynn was named one of the best elementary school principals in America by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). Mrs. Domenico’s global view can best be seen through her pioneering involvement in the NASA Specialized Center for Research and Training, as well as her schools’ ongoing involvement in GEM programs including UN Day and the UN Student Conference on Human Rights.

2005-06 Dra. Sandra Maldonado Baur
Sandra Maldonado Baur de Rivero Borrell is a distinguished educator from Mexico. Committed to building a Culture of Peace through education, Dra. de Rivero founded the Baur system of education in 1970. Today, she is the President of the Baur Cultural Foundation and Director-General of the three Carol Baur Schools, two in Mexico City and one in Querétaro. For her outstanding work as an educator, Doctora Sandra has received recognition both nationally and internationally. Among the medals that she has been awarded are the Golden Palms Special Award to Education, the Ignacio Manuel Altamirano Medal, the FEU Medal from Cuba, and the University of Havana Medal.
